El Salvador is strengthening police modernization and energy efficiency with a new fleet of electric vehicles for the National Civil Police (PNC), expanding the use of clean technology in public security operations.
Minister of Security and Justice Gustavo Villatoro delivered the new fleet, which includes electric pick-ups, SUVs, panel vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles. The units will support police operations and preventive security efforts in strategic areas across the country.
The transition to electric mobility began in 2021 with the incorporation of the first 65 electric motorcycles. Villatoro said the experience demonstrated the efficiency of the technology, while also reducing emissions and operating noise.
The government has also developed infrastructure to support the expansion of electric mobility. According to Villatoro, more than 2.2 megawatts of energy-generation capacity have been installed across more than eight locations operated by the PNC and the Ministry of Security, alongside more than 50 charging stations for vehicles and motorcycles.
The new electric fleet will be deployed in locations including San Salvador’s Historic Center, the international airport, and police delegations across Greater San Salvador and La Libertad. More than 200 electric motorcycles are also being incorporated into the police deployment network.
Electric vehicles are also being incorporated into police training, allowing future officers to become familiar with their silent operation, sensors, and energy-efficient driving technologies.
The initiative represents another step in El Salvador’s modernization of public security infrastructure, combining technological innovation, operational mobility, and energy efficiency to strengthen the work of police officers nationwide.
