El Salvador Hosts International Telecommunications Forum: A Step Towards Digital Transformation

El Salvador is now playing host to a landmark event in the world of telecommunications. For the first time in its history, the country proudly welcomes the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Regional Development Forum for the Americas. This unique forum, taking place from August 16 to 18, aims to foster the exchange of ideas on critical topics such as connectivity and sustainable digital transformation.

Spearheaded by the Salvadoran government through the General Superintendence of Electricity and Telecommunications (Siget), the event also seeks to bolster collaboration among policymakers in the telecommunications and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sectors.

Minister of Economy, María Luisa Hayem, expressed her enthusiasm for the occasion, highlighting the significance of this inaugural event. She mentioned the administration’s commitment to innovation and its role in the country’s rapid transformation.

“As the country undergoes an accelerated process of change, we are leveraging technology to drive development… Telecommunications hold a multiplier effect on the economy, providing easy access to healthcare and education services for communities,” Minister Hayem emphasized.

Furthermore, she highlighted the government’s efforts since 2019 to allocate additional radio spectrum, a move that has attracted substantial investments from companies eager to expand connectivity. “This expansion of the radio spectrum has positioned El Salvador as one of the leading nations with high connectivity scores, ranging from 2G to 4G,” she proudly declared during the opening ceremony.

Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of Telecommunication Development at ITU, extended gratitude to El Salvador for creating a conducive environment for the forum. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Government of El Salvador for hosting the Americas Regional Development Forum, a crucial platform for strengthening cooperation within the region and contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals,” Zavazava remarked.

He also commended the nation for its remarkable progress in enhancing connectivity in rural areas and its initiatives to introduce technology into public schools. “El Salvador is on a trajectory towards development. We are well aware of the country’s vision for impactful connectivity that truly benefits the people,” Zavazava concluded.

The ITU’s Regional Development Forum for the Americas 2023 in El Salvador sets a precedent for fruitful dialogues and meaningful exchanges on matters of connectivity and sustainable digital advancement. As this forum unfolds, participants and stakeholders alike eagerly anticipate the outcomes that will further shape the trajectory of El Salvador’s technological evolution.
