El Salvador to Invest $18.4 Million in AI-Powered Police Technology and 5G Infrastructure in 2027

El Salvador plans to invest $18.4 million in police technology modernization in 2027, expanding the use of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced communications systems, and digital infrastructure as part of President Nayib Bukele’s public security strategy.

Minister of Public Security and Justice Gustavo Villatoro presented the proposed investment to the Legislative Assembly’s Finance and Special Budget Committee during discussions on the government’s 2027 budget. The overall allocation for the security portfolio is projected at $682.59 million.

A central component of the initiative is the expansion of AI-powered digital tools within the National Civil Police (PNC). Villatoro said the force currently uses more than 17 virtual agents, with plans to increase that number to 50. These systems support emergency response, criminal investigations, and digital patrols by helping officers identify suspected offenders in photographs and video footage.

The minister also highlighted the development of locally operated AI systems, with servers and operations maintained within El Salvador. According to Villatoro, real-time access to information through broadband communications helps police deploy personnel more efficiently when incidents occur.
