President Bukele Fulfills Promise as El Salvador Allocates More Than 8% of GDP to Education

El Salvador has presented its 2027 General Budget of the Nation to the Legislative Assembly, placing education among the central areas of public investment as the country advances plans to modernize its education system.

The proposal allocates more than $3.4 billion to the education sector, according to the government announcement, following President Nayib Bukele’s commitment to raise education investment to more than 8% of GDP beginning in 2027. Bukele announced the 8% target earlier this month as part of a broader expansion of the country’s education modernization program.

The proposed funding is intended to support improvements in school infrastructure, technology and connectivity, while expanding the use of emerging tools such as artificial intelligence in education. It also seeks to strengthen educational opportunities for children and young people nationwide.

The education modernization agenda has already included investments in digital infrastructure, teacher development and technology. In July 2026, the Legislative Assembly approved an additional $14.37 million for the Education Modernization Program, financed through external loans.

The 2027 budget proposal now places the next phase of that modernization effort within a larger financial framework, with the government emphasizing education as an investment in the country’s future workforce and human capital.

As the budget moves through the legislative process, its proposed education allocation will be part of the broader discussion surrounding El Salvador’s public finances and development priorities for 2027.
