El Salvador’s Minister of Security, Gustavo Villatoro, appeared before the Congressional Finance Committee to present the government’s 2027 security budget proposal. During his address, Villatoro highlighted the unprecedented transformation of public safety under President Nayib Bukele, framing the nation’s strategy as a global benchmark for crime reduction and modern law enforcement.
Central to the presentation was a major milestone: 1,350 homicide-free days, with over 80% achieved under the ongoing State of Emergency. Villatoro underscored that aggressive measures were essential to neutralize gang networks previously linked to more than 98% of the country’s criminal activity, asserting that El Salvador now boasts “the most successful security and justice plan currently existing on the planet.”
Beyond traditional policing, the minister emphasized a technological shift toward sustainability, positioning the national force among a select few globally to adopt green mobility. The department has already integrated over 700 electric vehicles—including motorcycles, pick-ups, sedans, and vans—backed by an infrastructure plan to construct 53 specialized charging stations across key police headquarters.
As lawmakers review the 2027 resource allocation, the administration maintains that sustained funding is crucial to preserving low crime rates while advancing police modernization. Describing the EV transition as an “unprecedented step in operational efficiency,” Villatoro reassured the committee that the country remains committed to long-term safety and innovation.
