El Salvador Proposes $85.5 Million Tourism Investment for 2027 as International Arrivals Reach 3.2 Million

El Salvador’s government has proposed allocating $85.5 million to tourism-related initiatives in its 2027 General State Budget, reinforcing President Nayib Bukele’s administration’s efforts to expand the country’s tourism industry and attract more international visitors.

The proposed funding is currently under review by the Legislative Assembly’s Finance and Special Budget Committee. Of the total, $63.5 million would be assigned to the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), while $22 million would support tourism-related infrastructure through the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT).

Mitur’s proposed budget includes $30 million for the Salvadoran Tourism Corporation (Corsatur), $2.7 million for the Salvadoran Tourism Institute (ISTU), and $1 million for the San Salvador Historic Center Planning Authority (Aplan). The ministry would retain the remaining $29.7 million for institutional operations and sector development.

The investment is intended to strengthen international tourism promotion, support more than 4,000 businesses connected to the industry, and advance initiatives across accommodation, dining, transportation, recreation, and visitor services. Funding would also support professional accreditation for tourism workers and tour guides.

According to official figures, El Salvador welcomed 3.2 million international tourists between January and August 2026, with visitors staying an average of two to three weeks. Guatemala accounted for 41% of arrivals, followed by the United States at 27% and Honduras at 19%.

Domestic tourism also contributed substantially to the sector, with 6.5 million visits to public cultural and natural attractions generating $2.88 billion in revenue, according to the supplied figures.

If approved, the proposed allocation would provide additional resources to promote El Salvador as a regional and international destination while supporting tourism businesses and economic activity throughout the country.
