Elon Musk Highlights Bukele’s $3 Billion Education Investment Plan for El Salvador Starting in 2027

El Salvador is preparing for a major expansion of public investment in education, following President Nayib Bukele’s decision to raise education spending to the equivalent of 8% of the Salvadoran economy starting in 2027.

The initiative was highlighted by Elon Musk, drawing international attention to the government’s plans to significantly increase resources dedicated to education and human capital development.

Under the proposed expansion, El Salvador would allocate approximately $3 billion to education, compared with the current education budget of around $1.68 billion. The increased investment would represent a substantial shift in the country’s approach to strengthening its education system and expanding opportunities for Salvadoran students.

The plan would complement the 50,000 scholarships already underway, reinforcing efforts to provide greater access to academic and professional development.

With the new target scheduled to take effect in 2027, the Salvadoran government is positioning education as a central component of its next stage of national development, moving beyond security improvements toward long-term investment in skills, opportunity and economic growth.
