El Salvador has issued the first life imprisonment sentence in the country’s history, marking a significant development in its criminal justice system and reinforcing the government’s position against impunity and violent crime.
The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) secured the conviction of Carlos Arturo Herrera Castro, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for aggravated homicide and robbery in connection with the killing of Alexis López Córdova.
According to the case, the crime occurred in May 2026 in the Teosinte canton of Arcatao, Chalatenango Sur. Herrera Castro attacked López Córdova with stones, causing his death, in an incident prosecutors established was motivated by the theft of money.
The Third Criminal Court of San Salvador handed down the life sentence, representing the first such ruling following changes to El Salvador’s constitutional and criminal framework.
The conviction follows the reform of Article 27 of the Constitution and related secondary criminal laws, which entered into force in April 2026. The changes established the legal basis for life imprisonment in qualifying cases.
Minister of Justice and Public Security Gustavo Villatoro emphasized that the Salvadoran state will continue strengthening its response to serious crime, arguing that those who threaten the lives and security of citizens must face firm judicial consequences.
The ruling adds a new dimension to El Salvador’s broader security strategy, which has increasingly combined law enforcement measures with legal reforms aimed at strengthening the prosecution and punishment of serious crimes.
