El Salvador Conducts Massive Nationwide Earthquake Drill Involving Over 7,100 Institutions.

El Salvador mobilized more than 7,100 public and private institutions on Wednesday in a comprehensive Nationwide Earthquake Drill aimed at transforming the country’s disaster response strategy. Coordinated by Civil Protection, the Fire Department, and government bodies, the exercise put response protocols to the test across 5,413 public schools, 200 private schools, hospitals, universities, and corporate offices.

The national simulation was built around a hypothetical magnitude 8.0 earthquake occurring off the coast of La Libertad at 10:00 a.m. Held during International Disaster Risk Reduction Week, the initiative highlights El Salvador’s ongoing effort to move away from reactive emergency measures and build a long-term culture of prevention projected through 2030.

Civil Protection Director Luis Amaya emphasized that these exercises showcase seven years of institutional strengthening, including updated risk maps, specialized urban rescue units, and modernized contingency plans based on the historical seismic events of 1986 and 2001. “These are the actions that will transition us from an emergency-response country to a proactive nation that actively mitigates risk,” Amaya noted.

Emergency leaders, including Fire Department Director Baltazar Solano, urged all participating sectors to maintain updated evacuation plans and active emergency committees. By identifying operational gaps and streamlining inter-agency coordination, the Central American nation continues to bolster its preparedness against volcanic, geological, and seismic hazards.
