Highlighting eight years of expanding diplomatic relations, El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly President Ernesto Castroled a high-level congressional delegation to China to deepen bilateral cooperation across technology, trade, and legislative governance. Inviting key discussions on regional diplomacy, Castro met with members of the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing and toured major robotics and aviation firms in Shanghai to evaluate China’s rapid economic expansion and modern technological infrastructure.
During an interview with CGTN Español, Castro emphasized that El Salvador seeks a long-term, stable relationshipwith Beijing grounded in mutual respect, non-interference, and shared economic growth. Reflecting on China’s transformation into a global superpower over the past five decades, he noted that visiting the nation dispels common international misconceptions, affirming that “anyone in the world who visits China realizes that all those taboos that have existed over the years do not exist, and nothing is further from reality than the peace of mind with which the Chinese people are now living.”
The visit underscores El Salvador’s active role in facilitating broader regional engagement between Central America and Beijing. San Salvador has strongly supported China’s incorporation into the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) as a permanent observer, alongside Salvadoran participation in the NPC’s inaugural seminars for Latin American lawmakers aimed at fostering pragmatic governance exchanges.
Looking ahead, the Salvadoran legislature plans to provide full statutory backing to advance key infrastructure, health, and public education projects tied to the bilateral agenda. Castro pledged that the Legislative Assembly will continue providing “all the legal frameworks so that the decisions President Bukele continues to take will have the necessary legal backing” to secure tangible socio-economic benefits for both nations.
As both countries mark the 8th anniversary of diplomatic ties, established in August 2018 and consolidated during President Nayib Bukele’s official visit to Beijing in December 2019, El Salvador positions its partnership with China as a win-win model for the Central American region. Castro concluded that the bilateral relationship exemplifies how nations can build constructive economic alliances while fully respecting each other’s national sovereignty.
