El Salvador’s Private Banking Deposits Surge 17.4% to $20.7 Billion in March 2026.

El Salvador’s financial sector is experiencing a remarkable expansion, driven by a sharp increase in public confidence and a rapidly evolving savings culture. According to the latest report from the Salvadoran Banking Association (ABANSA), total deposits in the nation’s private banking system surged to $20,768 million at the close of March 2026. This represents an impressive 17.4% year-on-year growth, injecting an additional $3,090 million into the financial ecosystem compared to the same period last year.

A significant driver of this capital influx is the shift toward long-term financial security. Time deposits recorded one of the highest growth rates, climbing 19.7% year-on-year, as savers increasingly look for instruments that are more secure and offer better yields. This accumulation of liquidity substantially reinforces the country’s macroeconomic stability, positioning commercial banks to effectively funnel essential credit toward local businesses, emerging entrepreneurships, and Salvadoran families.

Simultaneously, the country is witnessing an unprecedented wave of financial inclusion. The private banking network successfully crossed the milestone of 7 million active accounts, marking a 21% expansion from the previous year. This surge includes over 1.28 million new savings and checking accounts opened within the last twelve months alone, a feat largely attributed to the introduction of simplified accounts that allowed more Salvadorans to access the formal financial system, eliminating barriers for low-income populations.

This massive structural growth is further accelerated by a profound digital transformation across the country. More than $11,000 million moved through an astonishing 66 million transactions during the first quarter of 2026 alone. Mobile banking led the digital migration with a spectacular 42% increase, closely followed by a 49% rise in internet banking operations, cementing online platforms as the primary gateway for modern financial management.
