Salvadoran Craft Rum Targets Asia’s Premium Spirits Market.

El Salvador is gaining international attention as an emerging producer of premium rum, offering high-quality products rooted in artisanal processes and cultural heritage.

As part of its strategy to promote national products abroad, the Embassy of El Salvador in Japan recently organized a tasting event featuring Ron Cihuatán. Several Japanese companies specializing in fine spirits participated in the event, which aimed to introduce Salvadoran rum to the Japanese market.

“This initiative is part of our broader Economic Diplomacy strategy,” said a representative of the embassy. “It’s about building commercial ties and creating interest in Salvadoran exports.”

One of the key attendees was Kimura, a Japanese importer known for distributing premium wines, beers, and spirits. The event aimed to spark commercial interest and explore potential distribution opportunities for Ron Cihuatán in Japan.

Ron Cihuatán, founded in 2004, is currently one of the most prominent distilleries in El Salvador. It belongs to the country’s oldest sugar producer, allowing it to control the entire production process—from sugarcane cultivation to final bottling.

The name “Cihuatán” comes from the Nahuat language and means “the land beside the sleeping woman,” referring to a Mayan legend. Inspired by Mesoamerican mythology, the brand combines tradition and creativity to craft a rum that aspires to conquer the world’s most discerning markets.
