As part of the “El Salvador Renace” strategy and ongoing public diplomacy efforts, the Embassy of El Salvador held a literary event on May 15 in Utrecht, celebrating the life and work of Salvadoran writer Salvador Salazar Arrué, known as Salarrué.

Organized with the Cervantes Institute of Utrecht, the event aimed to highlight El Salvador’s literary heritage for Dutch and Spanish-speaking audiences. Alberto Gascón, director of the Institute, praised Salarrué’s artistic depth, stating, “I was captivated because I believe he was a complete artist, a humanist.”
Ambassador Agustín Vásquez underscored Salarrué’s role in shaping national identity, noting that his stories reflect “the tenderness, innocence, and joy that are part of the Salvadoran soul.”

The program, led by Mirella de Vásquez, featured a biographical video and readings of key stories, including “El cuento de la Primeritita Comuñón de Menchedita Copalchines” and “El milagro de Hiradina.” Her lively interpretation brought Salarrué’s world to life, showcasing the richness of Salvadoran Spanish.
Attendees—ranging from Dutch literature enthusiasts to members of the Hispanic community—also enjoyed traditional Salvadoran food, such as pupusas and semita. The event offered a vibrant introduction to El Salvador’s literary and cultural legacy.
