The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) of El Salvador has officially launched the update process for its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) 3.0, a strategic framework outlining national efforts to combat climate change. This new phase strengthens the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing resilience against climate-related threats.

During the announcement, Environment Minister Fernando López explained the importance of the initiative. “Many ask what the NDC is. It’s what helps us plan and take the actions and measures that will allow us to face the challenges we are experiencing,” he stated.
The updated NDC will incorporate high-impact policies, climate actions, and mitigation measures aimed at reducing environmental pollution and preparing the nation for adverse climate effects, including droughts, floods, landslides, and extreme heat. The process receives technical and financial support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), along with strategic backing from the United Kingdom, Germany, and Sweden.
El Salvador’s initiative also reinforces its commitment to the Paris Agreement and calls for stronger global cooperation. “We are a country of 20,000 square kilometers, we are a small country, but we are working to overcome all these challenges,” López added.
With the update of NDC 3.0, El Salvador positions itself as a proactive regional actor in the global response to climate change.
