IAEA Will Ensure Nuclear Physical Security in El Salvador.

El Salvador is taking significant steps toward enhancing its nuclear security with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). A high-level meeting between government officials and IAEA representatives has set the stage for the country’s nuclear physical security framework, a vital component of El Salvador’s growing nuclear energy program.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, led a virtual meeting with El Salvador’s officials to discuss progress on the project, emphasizing the importance of securing nuclear energy. «As El Salvador advances in its plans to introduce nuclear energy, the IAEA is ready to support. This high-level meeting was an opportunity to underline the importance of nuclear security, ensuring that El Salvador can fully benefit from this energy source,» Grossi stated on social media.

The meeting was chaired by Grossi and attended by key government figures, including Daniel Alvarez, Director General of Energy, Hydrocarbons, and Mines; Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Adriana Mira; Minister of Health Francisco Alabí; Minister of the Environment Fernando López; and Attorney General Rodolfo Delgado, among others.

Alvarez expressed gratitude to the IAEA for its support and reiterated that nuclear physical security is a fundamental pillar of El Salvador’s Nuclear Energy Program. He emphasized that the country’s commitment to nuclear security is reflected in its Special Law against Acts of Terrorism and its participation in international conventions such as the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Materials and the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism.

«Without a doubt, nuclear physical security is a global priority. El Salvador is committed to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and to ensuring robust nuclear security,» said Alvarez.

Vice-Chancellor Mira highlighted the importance of the IAEA’s support in advancing El Salvador’s energy future. «With the IAEA’s guidance, we are moving toward a safe and sustainable energy future, which is crucial for the responsible development of nuclear energy,» she said.

This collaboration signals a major step forward in ensuring El Salvador’s nuclear energy plans are both secure and sustainable.
