El Salvador Moves Forward with Submarine Cable to Boost Connectivity.

El Salvador is set to enhance its high-speed connectivity through a submarine cable linking the country to Panama, according to reports from local media.

The initiative aims to strengthen the nation’s connection to the global telecommunications network. On Monday, the Finance and Special Budget Commission of the Legislative Assembly issued a favorable opinion to incorporate resources into the 2025 General State Budget under the Ministry of Economy. This allocation will kickstart the project designed to improve digital connectivity across the country.

The commission deemed it necessary to allocate $84.6 million to a special fund under the General Superintendency of Electricity and Telecommunications (SIGET). These funds will finance the first phase of the “Connectivity Sovereignty Strengthening Program: Submarine Cable.”

The project budget covers all stages, including design, construction, deployment, installation, and the operational launch of the submarine cable, which will enhance El Salvador’s integration into the global digital infrastructure.

If approved by the plenary session this Wednesday, the allocated funds will be transferred to the Ministry of Economy, under SIGET’s budgetary unit, to commence the project.
