El Salvador Launches IGA Academy to Train Future Geothermal Energy Leaders.

The Government of El Salvador, in collaboration with the International Geothermal Association (IGA), has officially launched the IGA Academy, a new initiative designed to train local professionals in geothermal energy. This academy will provide education and hands-on training to engineers, technicians, and experts from around the world, advancing the development and management of geothermal resources.

The academy is a significant step in El Salvador’s commitment to a sustainable energy transition. As a regional leader in geothermal energy, El Salvador currently derives 25% of its national energy from geothermal sources. With plans to expand its geothermal capacity by 2030, including new plants in the eastern region and optimization of existing facilities, the country is positioned to continue its role as a model for renewable energy development in Latin America.

Daniel Álvarez, Director of the General Directorate of Energy, Hydrocarbons, and Mines (DGEHM), highlighted the country’s pioneering efforts in geothermal energy: “We were the first in the region to have geothermal energy, and we have supported other countries in developing their resources.”

The Salvadoran government is also advancing other renewable energy projects, such as the upcoming Biogas Electric Generation Plant, which will focus on cleaning the Urbina, Tomayate, Acelhuate, and Lempa rivers.

Marit Brommer, Executive Director of the IGA, commended El Salvador’s leadership in sustainable energy, praising the efforts of President Nayib Bukele and the government. “El Salvador is setting the standard for renewable energy development in the region,” she said.

The IGA Academy will contribute to the continued growth of the geothermal sector, supporting El Salvador’s goal of leading the way in clean and renewable energy.
