In a groundbreaking move that underscores the evolving relationship between cryptocurrency and traditional commerce, Salvadoran coffee is now available for purchase with Bitcoin, thanks to a new partnership between Compass Coffee and the Biokrop Project.

The collaboration, facilitated by the Salvadoran Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the country’s Embassy in the United States, highlights the role of economic diplomacy in fostering international business connections. Compass Coffee, a well-known roaster and retailer with 15 locations across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C., has long been a proponent of cryptocurrency. In 2021, the company introduced a special «Bitcoin Blend» made with Salvadoran beans, in honor of Bitcoin’s legal tender status in El Salvador.
The latest development in this relationship sees Compass Coffee purchasing 15 quintals of high-quality Salvadoran coffee directly from Biokrop Project, a local producer. This transaction, conducted entirely in Bitcoin, not only strengthens the commercial ties between the two entities but also supports Salvadoran coffee growers by eliminating intermediaries and offering a price significantly higher than the market rate.

Chas Newman, operations manager at Compass Coffee, praised the Embassy’s crucial role in securing this deal. “The Embassy played a very important role in ensuring that we obtained the product we needed,” he stated.
Jorge Cruz from Biokrop Project echoed this sentiment, noting that the diplomatic intervention made it possible to bypass traditional financial channels and achieve a more favorable deal. “The transaction was 2 to 3 times higher than the stock market price and allowed us to eliminate financial and commercial intermediaries,” Cruz explained.

This innovative partnership not only highlights the potential of cryptocurrency in international trade but also underscores the quality of Salvadoran coffee and the value of diplomatic support in global business ventures.
