New Law Creates Framework for Nuclear Energy in El Salvador.

The Salvadoran Congress has approved the «Law for the Creation of the Organization for the Implementation of the Nuclear Energy Program in El Salvador» (OIPEN). This new entity will be responsible for conducting necessary studies for the installation of nuclear power plants aimed at generating electricity, supporting industrial processes, and utilizing by-products for medical and agricultural purposes.

OIPEN will operate under the oversight of the Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River (CEL). The organization will also be empowered to formulate national plans and policies to introduce nuclear energy for both electricity and heat generation.

The decree was passed with 54 votes from the Nuevas Ideas party, the National Coalition Party (PCN), and the Christian Democratic Party (PDC). Deputies from the ARENA and Vamos parties abstained from voting.

The Natrium Nuclear Reactor represents a new frontier in nuclear energy technology. Currently under construction in Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA, this reactor is a joint development by TerraPower and GE Hitachi. It utilizes liquid sodium instead of water, enabling it to operate at higher temperatures with increased efficiency and safety.

The Natrium reactor has the capability to store thermal energy to meet demand fluctuations and can recycle its radioactive waste into additional fuel. This innovative approach promises to be a sustainable and economical solution for a cleaner and safer future.
