Former Gang Vehicles Repurposed to Strengthen Police Force’s Fight Against Crime

In a significant achievement for the authorities, over 360 vehicles previously utilized by gang members to carry out crimes such as homicides and extortion have now been integrated into the ranks of the National Civil Police. This successful conversion of assets marks a major step in combating these criminal organizations.

“These 360 vehicles are now being employed against the gangs themselves, the very same vehicles once used by these criminals to inflict harm,” explained Police Director Mauricio Arriaza Chicas.

Among the seized automobiles are cars, motorcycles, minibusses, and pick-up trucks, all of which are currently being utilized by various units within the Police to combat these terrorist-like structures.

The Police Director expressed his hope that the assets seized, including those obtained through the fight against corruption, would continue to fall into their hands, enabling them to further confront these organized crime networks.

“These seized assets, with their significant value, and the confiscated funds are reinvested into public security activities,” explained the official.

Arriaza Chicas asserts that after four years of implementing the Territorial Control Plan and 14 months under the state of emergency, the security outlook for El Salvador is positive.

“Over the course of these four years under President Naayib Bukele, the people have witnessed the results in terms of security. The war against gangs represents the restoration of the rule of law for the good Salvadorans,” stated the head of the police force.

“We must remember where we came from, with alarmingly high homicide rates, reaching 105 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, which classified us as one of the most violent cities in the world. However, that is now a thing of the past,” affirmed the police director.

Currently, El Salvador has achieved a homicide rate of 1.8 per 100,000 inhabitants, positioning it as one of the safest countries on the continent.
