Last Thursday, December 15, it ended with a national record of zero homicides, according to official statistics from the National Civil Police (PNC), indicating that there are 12 days in December 2022 that have closed without deaths due to violence.
President Nayib Bukele highlighted the fact by declaring on his Twitter account that «El Salvador is already irrefutably the safest country in Latin America. It is incredible to think that, until a few years ago, we were the most dangerous country in the world. A good government gives results. A bad government makes excuses. God be with us!
On the other hand, the implementation of the Territorial Control Plan during the emergency regime has allowed 186 homicides to be registered during said period, compared to 485 throughout the year. Defense Minister René Francis Merino Monroy declared that «we are striving to end with fewer than 500 homicides throughout the year.»
In comparison, in 2015, the most violent year in the history of El Salvador, 918 homicides were registered during the month of August of that year.
The emergency regime has allowed the capture of more than 60,000 gang members nationwide thanks to the coordinated work between the PNC and the Armed Forces.
