May is the safest month in the history of El Salvador

May 2022 has so far become the safest month in the history of El Salvador, as it recorded 17 days with zero homicides, a record figure.

The National Civil Police details that, in addition, in that month there were only 17 homicides nationwide, a figure that exceeded that of April of this year: 22 violent deaths.

“May has become the safest month in all of Latin America. Seventeen homicides in a month, the country with the lowest per capita rate of homicides if we do not count the gang members who died trying to confront our security forces. Goingfrom the most insecure country in the world to the safest country in Latin America is not just anything, and it is not because we are doing things wrong, ” President Nayib Bukele stated in his three-year government speech.

During this year, homicides have fallen sharply. In the first six months, 372 crimes and 49 days with zero homicides were reported. More than 80% of these have been reported during the emergency regime. There were four days without violent deaths in April, compared to one day in February, three days in March, four days in April, and 12 so far in June.

To date, the current government has achieved 142 days with zero homicides. From June 31 to December 31, 2019, six days with zero homicides were recorded, while between January and December 2020, the authorities reported 31 days without murders, and for 2021, the figure increased to 34.
