El Salvador Combines Infrastructure and Social Impact: Over 4,400 km Paved and 110,000 Trained in Road Safety.

El Salvador’s Road Maintenance Fund (FOVIAL) presented its 2026 operational achievements and 2027 strategic projection before the Legislative Assembly’s Finance Committee. Executive Director Alex Beltrán confirmed that the agency maintained 100% connectivity across its national road network, deploying 3,678 workers and 1,708 machinery units to manage 551 weather-related emergencies. Highlighting the agency’s operational readiness, Beltrán noted that “our crews remain fully deployed nationwide to safeguard mobility and keep economic transit moving without interruption.”

On the ground, FOVIAL laid 171,333 cubic meters of asphalt across 4,446.99 kilometers of paved roads, significantly reducing daily travel times for thousands of families. Rural connectivity saw targeted progress with 29.75 kilometers of new paving, including strategic agricultural and cross-border routes in Ahuachapán and Santa Ana. “Paving these rural corridors directly links isolated communities to essential public services and vital trade routes,” Beltrán emphasized during his address.

Beyond physical paving, the agency balanced infrastructure expansion with environmental stewardship and social engagement. Its green initiative, MOP-FOVIAL Verde, crossed a historic milestone by producing over 1 million plants to date, including 200,000 nursery plants in 2026 alone. Simultaneously, the #RutaFovialito program projected training for more than 110,000 citizens in road safety, alongside opening a permanent educational exhibit at the Tin Marín Children’s Museum to foster early environmental awareness.

Looking ahead to 2027, FOVIAL plans to accelerate structural connectivity with major bridge projects—including key spans over the Sucio, Miraflores, Los Mangos, and El Bambú rivers—alongside comprehensive intersection upgrades in Santa Ana. Beltrán concluded that “infrastructure must serve a dual purpose: building resilient physical routes while actively investing in the safety and well-being of the Salvadoran people.”
