WHO Regional Director Praises El Salvador’s “Doctor SV” Digital Health Model.

El Salvador is gaining international recognition for its rapid modernization of public healthcare and digital medicine initiatives. During a recent official visit to the nation, Dr. Hanan H. Balkhy, Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO), met with Health Minister Francisco Alabi and Vice Foreign Minister Adriana Mira to learn firsthand about the country’s health infrastructure advances and explore deeper collaboration.

A key highlight of the visit was the evaluation of Doctor SV, El Salvador’s flagship digital health platform. Dr. Balkhy commended the program for making telemedicine and essential medical services broadly accessible to the population, writing on X that “the country has made impressive progress in recent years, including in digital health through ‘DoctorSV’, an emblematic initiative that brings telemedicine and other health services closer to the people.”

Beyond technological advancements, the Saudi physician—who completed her pediatric residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States—visited Zacamil Hospital to connect directly with young doctors and patients, noting “the human touch that can make a big difference.” She also lauded the Nacer con Cariño initiative, championed by First Lady Gabriela de Bukele, for promoting “respectful childbirth and loving support for mothers and newborns.”

This official tour forms part of the WHO’s ongoing effort to engage directly with Member States to better understand local healthcare contexts. Through initiatives like Doctor SV and modernized maternal healthcare models, El Salvador continues to establish actionable benchmarks for digital integration and compassionate patient care across the region.
