El Salvador’s security transformation is drawing renewed international attention as the country receives the U.S. government’s lowest travel advisory level, while Sweden remains under a Level 2 advisory due to terrorism concerns.

The U.S. Department of State currently classifies El Salvador at Level 1, “Exercise Normal Precautions,” its lowest travel advisory designation. The advisory, issued in June 2026, notes that gang activity has declined dramatically since 2022, contributing to a significant reduction in violent crime and homicides.

The designation represents a notable shift in the international perception of a country that was previously associated with high levels of gang violence and organized crime. Under President Nayib Bukele, the government has made public security a central priority, implementing an aggressive strategy against criminal organizations.

The contrast with Sweden has also attracted attention. The U.S. State Department currently places Sweden at Level 2, advising travelers to exercise increased caution because of terrorism risks.

While travel advisory levels measure specific risks and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive global safety ranking, the different classifications highlight the scale of El Salvador’s security turnaround.

The country’s improved security environment is increasingly influencing its international image, strengthening its position as a destination for tourism, investment, and international attention.
