In a major leap forward for international mobility, El Salvador’s Committee on Salvadorans Abroad has issued a favorable decision to ratify a landmark reciprocal agreement with Italy. Signed by foreign affairs authorities in June 2026, this bilateral treaty will grant full legal validity to non-provisional driver’s licenses issued in both nations. Once given final approval by the Legislative Assembly, Salvadorans residing in Italy and Italian nationals living in El Salvador will be able to convert their driving permits directly without facing burdensome bureaucratic delays.
The agreement eliminates the need for theoretical exams or practical driving assessments in the host country, saving applicants significant time and money. According to Lisandro Landaverde, Chief of Negotiations and Treaties at El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, operations will be strictly overseen by El Salvador’s Vice Ministry of Transport (VMT) and Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to verify document authenticity. Landaverde emphasized that this seamless transition ensures immediate legal compliance, noting that “this agreement will facilitate labor market insertion for those who need a vehicle for their daily productive activities.”
Beyond regulatory ease, the initiative addresses critical socio-economic barriers facing the diaspora. By removing the requirement to enroll in expensive private driving schools or retake tests from scratch, the treaty directly boosts workforce mobility and economic stability for thousands of Salvadoran workers abroad. Furthermore, driver’s license holders will operate under the full protection—and obligations—of the traffic laws and regulations in their host nation, fostering a shared culture of road safety and civic responsibility.
This milestone agreement underscores a deepening diplomatic and economic partnership between San Salvador and Rome.
