El Salvador’s agricultural and food manufacturing industries are experiencing an unprecedented international boom. According to the Salvadoran Exporters Corporation (Coexport), the country’s food sector has achieved a remarkable 54% growth over the last five years, successfully placing local products into 103 international markets. Backed by data from the Central Reserve Bank, the industry closed with record-breaking exports totaling $1,500.5 million, marking a steady 5% increase compared to the previous year and consolidating its position as a primary engine for national economic growth.

The United States remains the undisputed cornerstone of this commercial success, capturing $381.98 million in purchases, which accounts for 25.5% of the total exported volume. While staple goods like sugar, beverages, and grains make up the bulk of the traditional trade, the American market is showing a rapidly increasing appetite for Salvadoran nostalgic products. Culturally significant items are leading this niche expansion, highlighted by companies like Fernaldia Exportaciones, which ships over 5,000 pounds of fresh loroco weekly to major metropolitan hubs including Los Ángeles, Houston, and Washington.
Despite the current export records, entering the highly lucrative U.S. arena demands strict adherence to rigorous quality frameworks. Industry leaders emphasize that international commercial success is deeply tied to regulatory modernization. Silvia Cuéllar, President of Coexport, pointed out that “regulatory requirements are constantly evolving, and companies must prepare to respond to increasingly rigorous standards. Safety, traceability, and regulatory compliance are determining factors for maintaining competitiveness and seizing new export opportunities.”
To directly address these global challenges and explore emerging trade trends, Coexport has announced the upcoming Health, Safety, and Food Quality Congress, scheduled for June 25 and 26. This specialized event will serve as a strategic platform for Salvadoran businesses looking to navigate international distribution laws, streamline logistics, and safely scale their manufacturing operations to meet the rigorous demands of global buyers.
