Authorities in El Salvador have launched one of the most significant judicial proceedings against gang structures in recent years, as 152 alleged members of the Barrio 18 appear in a single open hearing linked to criminal activities in Ilobasco, Cabañas.
The case, being heard at the Third Court Against Organized Crime, involves individuals identified in various operational roles within the organization, including gunmen, local leaders, surveillance operatives, civilian collaborators, and logistical support members. Prosecutors allege that the group maintained territorial control in the area, coordinating illicit operations that disrupted public safety and community stability.
According to judicial authorities, the defendants face a wide range of charges, including homicide, extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, organized crime, illegal possession and carrying of firearms, possession with intent to distribute narcotics, and aggravated threats. The breadth of accusations reflects the complexity and scale of the alleged criminal network.
Officials emphasize that consolidating these cases into a single hearing represents a strategic effort to streamline judicial processes and strengthen accountability mechanisms against organized crime. The proceedings are part of broader national efforts to dismantle gang structures and restore security in affected communities.
This case underscores El Salvador’s ongoing commitment to reinforcing the rule of law and advancing large-scale prosecutions aimed at reducing criminal activity and safeguarding citizens across the country.
