Minister of Security Gustavo Villatoro, alongside U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Naomi Fellows and high-ranking migration and police officials, presided over the closing ceremony of three specialized training courses under the Centam Guardian program. This initiative, supported by the United States government through the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), serves as a strategic pillar in fortifying El Salvador’s ability to confront complex security threats and organized crime.
During the event, Minister Villatoro emphasized the significant evolution of the National Civil Police, noting that the force has transitioned from being a passive recipient of training for two decades to a specialized body capable of executing high-level security programs. We have been making efforts that have completely transformed the treatment of criminal organizations that a firm and brave State of Law must undertake, the Minister stated, highlighting the nation’s proactive stance against regional instability.
A key highlight of the collaboration is the joint effort between the Salvadoran General Directorate of Migration and U.S. law enforcement agencies. This partnership is specifically designed to track and apprehend high-profile targets, including serial killers and dangerous fugitives who attempt to cross borders. Thanks to the effective and efficient collaboration with United States law enforcement, we are bringing those fugitives to justice, Villatoro added, acknowledging the direct impact of this international cooperation.
The Minister expressed his gratitude to the U.S. government for its continued support, reminding the graduates that their role is vital to maintaining the safety of the continent. He addressed the officers directly, saying, To all participants, continue to honor the Police you represent, which is, today, the best on the continent. He noted that behind the uniform lies a tireless spirit dedicated to upholding order and protecting the citizenry from criminal elements.
This closing ceremony marks another milestone in the bilateral relationship between El Salvador and the United States, focusing on a shared vision of a safer region. By integrating advanced training with real-time intelligence sharing, both nations aim to ensure that there are no safe havens for international criminals. The Centam Guardian program continues to be a vital tool in professionalizing law enforcement and achieving tangible results in the fight against transnational crime.
