Salvadoran Chess Reaches Santo Domingo 2026 with Four Athletes Securing Regional Spots.

El Salvador will be represented by four chess players at the XV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 after successfully completing a recent qualifying tournament. The results confirm the country’s growing presence in regional chess competitions.

International Master Jorge Girón and FIDE Master Carlos Morales finished in sixth place in the men’s division, while International Master Angie García and FIDE Master Celina Palacios placed eighth in the women’s category, securing their qualification for the multi-sport event.

According to David Blanco, president of the Salvadoran Chess Federation, these results reflect sustained effort by both the athletes and the federation. “It is definitely an achievement for the athletes and for the federation. They are the ones who completed the qualifiers in each category, and for some of them this is their second qualification,” he said.

Blanco noted that competition across the region continues to improve and that the Santo Domingo 2026 Games will present a strong challenge. “We will face high-level chess players, and we expect to prepare in the best possible way in the months leading up to the Games,” he added.

The federation also aims to surpass the performance achieved at the Central American Games Guatemala 2025, where El Salvador earned gold medals, now setting its sights on success at the broader Central American and Caribbean level.
