El Salvador continues to strengthen its global reputation as a leader in Bitcoin adoption, as the Salvadoran company Bitcoin Travel announced that it is processing international airline tickets paid entirely with Bitcoin. The agency has already managed purchases for flights originating in Canada, Kenya, and South Africa, all bound for El Salvador, demonstrating the viability of BTC in complex international travel transactions.
This development could motivate major airlines to integrate direct Bitcoin payments. Bitcoin Travel confirmed it is encouraging carriers such as Air Canada, Air Mauritius, and Kenya Airways to adopt BTC as a payment option. The company describes its mission simply: “No banks or intermediaries; just freedom of movement.”
Founded and registered in El Salvador, Bitcoin Travel promotes itself as the world’s first online travel agency operating exclusively with Bitcoin. Its first full-BTC airline ticket sale was completed on April 29, 2025, for a flight from Brussels, Belgium, to Montreal, Canada.
Founder Guillermo Figueroa explained that the company was inspired by El Salvador’s Bitcoin Law and driven by a commitment to build real-use infrastructure around the digital currency. “It took us 60 days to make our first sale after launching. Many would have given up, but we persevered because we believe in building the future—even if the world isn’t quite ready for it yet,” he said in an interview with CriptoNoticias.
To achieve global booking capability, the agency uses a modern airline communication standard known as NDC, a tool created by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This system enables direct access to worldwide flight schedules, prices, and personalized offers without traditional intermediaries.
Figueroa noted that Bitcoin Travel’s core mission is to bring financial utility to those who lack access to banking services. “Our mission is to make Bitcoin usable in the daily lives of people who don’t have a bank account, who need to travel, and who need privacy in their payments. That’s why we started with travel—one of the most global and friction-ridden industries.”
Bitcoin Travel is also processing flights for speakers and guests attending Bitcoin Histórico, held November 12 and 13, as well as Adopting Bitcoin 2025, hosted on November 14 and 15. These events reflect the growing influence of Bitcoin tourism in the country.
According to the latest UN Tourism report, El Salvador has become the third fastest-growing international tourist destination since 2019, recording an 81% increase in visitor arrivals over the past five years. As Bitcoin integration advances across sectors, the country continues to reinforce its position as a global hub for digital innovation and decentralized finance.
