Authorities from El Salvador’s Directorate of Municipal Works (DOM) have inaugurated the new municipal market in Chalchuapa, located in the western department of Santa Ana. The modern facility was designed to provide dignified and suitable conditions for both buyers and vendors, marking a significant step toward improving local commerce infrastructure.
The new market consists of three interconnected modules—A, B, and C—spread across three and four levels, complete with terraces, ramps, and stairways with handrails to ensure accessibility for all. For public convenience, restrooms are available on the second and third floors, including facilities for people with disabilities. The space also features green areas, gardens, two water cisterns, a fire prevention system, security booth, LED lighting, a waste collection zone, containers, and clear signage.
In total, the building houses 912 commercial stalls, organized according to the type of goods sold. The first level includes stands for fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood, while the upper floors offer non-perishable goods such as clothing, footwear, and household items. The terraces host dining areas and restaurants, creating a vibrant commercial and social environment.
“This project not only represents a boost for local commerce but also generated more than 800 jobs during its construction, significantly contributing to the economic recovery of the area,” the DOM said in a statement.
