U.S. Senator Ted Cruz highlighted El Salvador’s historic security achievements during his visit with President Nayib Bukele, Justice and Public Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro, and other government officials.
The Senator praised the country’s results in the fight against gangs and terrorism, noting that El Salvador has reduced its murder rate by 98%, making it one of the safest countries in the Western Hemisphere.
“Great to visit and discuss the battle against gangs and terrorism being waged by El Salvador with President Bukele, Justice Minister Villatoro, and other officials. They have lowered murder rates by 98%. There are lessons here for the region and beyond,” Cruz stated.

El Salvador’s Territorial Control Plan and the construction of the CECOT mega-prison have been central to these achievements, supported by strategic policies that dismantled gang structures and restored safety to communities long affected by violence.
Senator Cruz emphasized that the Salvadoran model provides important insights for other nations in the region facing similar challenges. The results underscore how strong political will and decisive action can transform public security and improve citizens’ quality of life.
El Salvador’s government continues to showcase its security strategy as an international reference, demonstrating how effective governance can bring peace and prosperity after decades of violence.
