Bukele Modernizes El Salvador’s Public Markets to Create Safer, Cleaner, and More Competitive Cities

President Nayib Bukele reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming public spaces into engines of growth, stressing that markets in El Salvador are no longer seen as problems but as opportunities to strengthen communities and improve quality of life.

“Markets were always seen as problems that had to be addressed. But we see them as opportunities that must be strengthened, opportunities for thousands of families to have decent incomes, for cities to be cleaner and safer, for commerce to grow without depending on corruption or fear, and for free competition and a real market,” President Bukele said.

The President emphasized that the government’s vision goes beyond construction projects, focusing on integrity, transparency, and impact for the population. “This isn’t just about new buildings; it’s about showing that, when there’s a will, the people’s money is invested in the people. It doesn’t matter if it’s markets, hospitals, schools, or roads; it’s the same commitment: to do things right, for the public sector to be better than the private sector, and to show that money goes a long way when no one steals.”

President Bukele noted that the transformation of markets is part of a broader national strategy to modernize infrastructure and foster economic activity. “What we’re showing today is that no matter how long things have been bad, we can rebuild them and we can have the future we deserve,” he concluded.

With this approach, the government of El Salvador continues to prioritize projects that generate sustainable development, strengthen commerce, and improve the daily lives of Salvadoran families.
