El Salvador has inaugurated the new San Miguelito Market, a modern and safe space rebuilt from the ground up after the devastating fire of 2021. With an investment of $34 million, the project reflects the government’s commitment to providing dignified conditions for both merchants and visitors.
The new facility spans 45,000 square meters across four levels and includes more than 1,000 commercial spaces, a terrace with food areas, gardens, and panoramic views of San Salvador. It also integrates a Child Care Center and lactation rooms to support families. Safety has been prioritized through an advanced fire prevention system and secure infrastructure.
President Nayib Bukele, who toured the facilities, emphasized that this effort goes beyond rebuilding a marketplace. “We decided not only to change roofs or floors, because the problem was deeper. That is why we created the National Markets Directorate, a new institution backed by law, to guarantee clear rules, real control, and legal support,” he stated.
The government confirmed that historical vendors will retain their stalls, and rental fees will remain the same as before. “The fact that public infrastructure is now better than private does not mean it is only for the rich. On the contrary, it is for the people,” Bukele said.
San Miguelito Market now stands as a symbol of renewal, offering safe, functional, and orderly spaces that strengthen local commerce and restore pride in one of the country’s most important markets.
