El Salvador Expands Healthcare Access in Sonsonate, Reinforcing Its Public Health Commitment.

El Salvador continues to expand its national healthcare network with the inauguration of the San Isidro Health Unit in the Izalco district of eastern Sonsonate. The facility is expected to benefit more than 14,000 residents and provide approximately 28,000 medical services annually, according to the Ministry of Health.

Led by Health Minister Francisco Alabi, the new center aims to strengthen access to primary care services, including preventive checkups for children, adolescents, adults, the elderly, and pregnant women. “We are inaugurating the San Isidro Health Unit in Sonsonate, thus providing a solid response to nearly 14,000 residents,” said Alabi during the opening ceremony.

The unit also offers services for non-communicable disease management, family planning, preconception counseling, high-risk reproductive care, cytology, and HPV screenings. Equipped with a clinical laboratory, the facility ensures diagnostic support and early detection.

Designed to meet diverse community needs, the center features three medical consulting rooms, a dental area, a breastfeeding space, and an oral rehydration room for patients requiring fluid therapy.

Present at the inauguration were Deputy Minister of Health Operations Karla Díaz, Director of Primary Care Marbel Magaña, and San Isidro Health Unit Director Wendy Rodríguez.

This new health infrastructure reflects El Salvador’s ongoing commitment to strengthening public health, especially in underserved areas, and is part of the broader national strategy to ensure equitable and comprehensive healthcare access across the country.
