El Salvador has officially joined the United Nations Convention on the Use of Electronic Communications in International Contracts, reaffirming its commitment to modernizing trade. The announcement was made during the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), held in Vienna from July 7 to 23.
Eduardo García, Director of Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that the country ratified the Convention on April 7, 2025, becoming its 20th State Party. “This ratification is not a final destination, but part of a broader vision,” he said, citing the country’s progress through the Electronic Commerce Law, the Digital Agenda 2020–2030, and the Foreign Trade Single Window, which has processed over 80,000 digital transactions.
The Convention ensures that electronic contracts have the same legal weight as those on paper, promoting trust in digital trade and removing legal barriers. El Salvador also recognized the efforts of Ambassador Julia Villatoro and thanked UNCITRAL Secretary Anna Joubin-Bret for her support and 2023 visit to the country.
