Bukele is a friend who understands what matters to the United States, says Adam Boehler.

El Salvador played a pivotal role in a successful international negotiation that led to the release of ten American citizens previously detained in Venezuela. The diplomatic effort, praised by U.S. officials during appearances on CNN and Fox News, highlighted the country’s growing influence on the global stage and the leadership of President Nayib Bukele.

In a recent interview on CNN’s State of the Union, Adam Boehler, U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Response, credited President Bukele as “great” and described him as a key friend of the United States. Boehler confirmed that Bukele facilitated a confidential agreement involving detainees held in the Center for Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT) in El Salvador, which resulted in Venezuela’s decision to release the U.S. citizens.

“President Bukele has been a good friend. He reached a deal with Venezuela, and thanks to his help, all our citizens returned safely,” said Boehler. He emphasized the emotional shift of the returning Americans—from fear and confusion to visible relief—as they were transferred to U.S. custody.

On Fox News, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce reinforced the significance of El Salvador’s involvement. “This is another fantastic example of the strong relationship we have with President Bukele,” Bruce stated. She explained that Bukele offered to transfer members of the Tren de Aragua—an international criminal gang—to Venezuela as part of a humanitarian exchange.

According to Bruce, this agreement allowed Venezuela to release third-country nationals, including Americans, who were being held unjustly. “We’re thrilled that so many U.S. citizens are now back home thanks to this strategic cooperation,” she added.

This diplomatic success not only underscores El Salvador’s emerging role as a regional stabilizer but also demonstrates the country’s willingness to engage in complex international negotiations for the sake of humanitarian outcomes. The move further strengthens El Salvador’s standing with the United States, showing how diplomacy and internal security reform can go hand-in-hand under firm leadership.
