Unlike Honduras and Nicaragua, El Salvador Maintains TPS Through 2026.

Following the recent cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras and Nicaragua, many have questioned the current situation for Salvadorans living in the United States under this program. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), TPS for El Salvador remains in effect until September 9, 2026.

The official USCIS website states that the re-registration period for those already holding TPS will run from January 17, 2025, through March 18, 2025. “We recommend that you re-register for TPS as early as possible during the re-registration period,” the agency advises.

Eligible Salvadorans must demonstrate continuous residence in the U.S. since February 13, 2001, and continuous physical presence since March 9, 2001. TPS for El Salvador was originally designated on March 9, 2001, and has been periodically extended ever since.

Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for current beneficiaries have been automatically extended through March 9, 2026. Those re-registering can file Form I-821 online to renew their TPS status and may also submit Form I-765 to apply for or renew their work permits.

The USCIS confirmed that the TPS information for El Salvador was last reviewed on July 7, 2025.
