El Salvador is on the verge of achieving one of the most impressive public safety milestones in recent global history: a projected homicide rate of less than 1 per 100,000 inhabitants by the end of 2025, following a decade of determined and sustained anti-crime strategies.
According to data published by World of Statistics and shared by President Nayib Bukele on July 4, El Salvador has dropped from holding the highest homicide rate in the world in 2015 — 106.3 per 100,000 — to potentially becoming the safest country in Latin America.

From the epicenter of violence to a new regional standard
The trajectory is remarkable. Year after year, El Salvador has consistently reduced violence with focused strategy and state-led action:
- 2015: 106.3
- 2016: 84.1
- 2017: 83.0
- 2018: 53.1
- 2019: 38.0
- 2020: 21.2
- 2021: 18.1
- 2022: 7.8
- 2023: 2.4
- 2024: 1.9
- 2025: ~ <1 (projected)
This turnaround has been largely driven by key initiatives such as the Territorial Control Plan and the State of Exception, which have resulted in the arrest of more than 80,000 gang members and the dismantling of long-standing criminal structures.
Zero as a national horizon
While the 2025 figure remains a projection, the data from previous years supports its plausibility. In 2023 and 2024, El Salvador recorded multiple months with zero homicides, indicating that the country may close the year without a single month of murders nationwide.
This signals a deeper shift: for the first time in its modern history, homicide is no longer a structural phenomenon in Salvadoran society.

Global recognition and shifting perceptions
The World of Statistics post surpassed 179,000 views in less than a week, generating interest from global media outlets, security analysts, and diaspora communities. Once labeled the most dangerous country on Earth, El Salvador is now being studied as a model of profound social transformation.
“Security is freedom. And freedom is the foundation for everything else: growth, dignity, and life,” President Bukele said in a previous national address.
A safer nation drives tourism, investment, and return migration
Backed by one of the lowest homicide rates in the world, El Salvador is now positioning itself as a safe destination for foreign investment, Bitcoin tourism, and the return of its diaspora. The new national image is no longer built on fear, but on recovery, order, and opportunity.
A new national story begins
This transformation isn’t just measured in statistics — it’s measured in lives saved, communities restored, and futures made possible. El Salvador is turning the page on its most violent chapter and projecting a bold new identity on the global stage.
“El Salvador projects the eradication of homicide as a structural phenomenon.”
