El Salvador Begins Legislative Process for New Robotics Technology Law.

The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador has officially begun reviewing a new bill to establish the Robotics Technology Law, marking a significant step in the country’s push to become a regional leader in technological innovation and artificial intelligence regulation.

The initiative, submitted by the Executive Branch, is being studied by the Technology, Tourism, and Investment Committee. During a working session held this week, legislators reviewed the bill’s 22 articles, which aim to create a regulatory framework to promote research, development, and the use of robotics in key sectors such as commerce, industry, and education.

The proposed law outlines the ethical and environmental standards for robotics applications, including the use of renewable energy, energy-efficient systems, and robotic operations in public spaces. It also covers robotics designed for direct interaction with people, including applications in healthcare, elderly care, and services for children and persons with disabilities.

Oversight and enforcement of the law would be the responsibility of the National Agency for Artificial Intelligence (ANIA), which will establish a Robotics Division. This division will focus on setting safety standards, conducting risk assessments, and guiding implementation across different sectors.

To strengthen the legislative process, the committee has invited Mario Flamenco, Director of ANIA, to offer technical insights. Dania González, president of the committee and deputy from the Nuevas Ideas party, emphasized that the bill aligns with the government’s innovation goals.
“El Salvador is advancing at a very efficient pace thanks to the vision of President Nayib Bukele,” she said. “We are creating new legal frameworks that allow us to be at the forefront.”

If passed, this law would place El Salvador among the few Latin American nations actively legislating the future of robotics, reinforcing the country’s technological leadership under the Bukele administration.
