In celebration of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between El Salvador and Japan, the Embassy of El Salvador in Tokyo has launched a cultural exhibition dedicated to the maquilishuat, the Central American nation’s national tree. The event aims to deepen the bonds of friendship and cooperation that have united both countries since 1935.

Held at the Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome in Tokyo, the exhibition is a collaborative effort between the embassy and the botanical garden, which hosts the only maquilishuat specimen in Japan. The initiative seeks to offer Japanese visitors a closer look at Salvadoran identity through its rich natural and cultural heritage.

“This exhibition is a bridge between our peoples, allowing Japanese audiences to connect with El Salvador’s unique beauty and traditions,” said representatives of the Salvadoran Embassy. The maquilishuat, known for its striking pink and white blossoms, shares visual similarities with Japan’s iconic cherry blossom, creating a natural connection between both nations.

Visitors can also explore artistic expressions and locally inspired products that highlight elements of Salvadoran culture. With over 6.5 million annual visitors to Yumenoshima, the event offers a meaningful platform to introduce El Salvador’s essence to a wider international audience.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until May 11.
