From Chaos to Calm: President Bukele Defends El Salvador’s Peace Amid Accusations of Secret Deals.

President Nayib Bukele sharply criticized human rights NGOs, global media outlets, elites, and philanthropist George Soros on Friday, accusing them of opposing El Salvador’s recent peace and security gains because they have lost what he called their “business” in the country.

“It’s clear that a peaceful country, with no deaths, no extortion, no blood, no corpses every day, no mothers crying over their children, is not profitable for human rights NGOs, globalist media, elites, or Soros,” Bukele wrote on social media platform X at 12:33 p.m. on May 2. “Their problem with El Salvador is not only that they lost their business here, but that the country is becoming an example to others: that terrorism can be defeated, and peace is possible.”

The president’s remarks come on the heels of a controversial article by investigative outlet El Faro titled “The Confessions of Charli: Interview with a Gang Leader Who Negotiated with the Bukele Government.” Many users on social media have accused El Faro journalists of criminal complicity, claiming they knowingly met with “Charli,” a gang member with an active arrest warrant, and have refused to disclose his whereabouts.
