El Salvador continues to strengthen its position as an emerging destination for international cruise tourism, with the arrival of over 3,000 passengers aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam, a prestigious vessel operated by Holland America Line. This marks the second cruise ship to dock in the country during the 2024-2025 cruise season.
Docking at the Port of Acajutla this Thursday, the Nieuw Amsterdam brought thousands of tourists eager to explore the natural beauty and cultural richness of El Salvador. Visitors embarked on excursions to iconic sites such as the Historic Center of San Salvador, as well as other renowned national attractions, before continuing their journey along the Pacific coast of the Americas.

This 285-meter-long luxury liner is renowned for its world-class amenities and an onboard art collection valued at over $3 million. Sailing from major ports across the United States and Canada, the Nieuw Amsterdam regularly traverses routes that include the Caribbean, Alaska, the Pacific Coast, and the Panama Canal. Its return to El Salvador—following a previous visit in October 2023—reflects the country’s growing appeal as a strategic stop in regional cruise itineraries.
The Salvadoran cruise season officially began in February with the arrival of The World, the largest private residential yacht on the planet. During that visit, travelers explored destinations including Izalco, the Santa Ana Volcano, the Joya de Cerén Archaeological Park, and several western beaches, showcasing the country’s diverse tourism offerings.
With modern infrastructure, rich heritage, and increasing international visibility, El Salvador continues to position itself as a must-visit stop for cruise lines operating along the Pacific. The arrival of high-profile vessels like the Nieuw Amsterdam underlines this momentum and reflects the nation’s commitment to sustainable tourism and global connectivity.
