In celebration of Earth Day, the San Salvador Centro municipal government distributed 10,000 ornamental, shrub, and forest plants across various locations in the capital on Tuesday. The initiative aimed to raise awareness among the population about the importance of environmentally friendly practices.
Municipal employees handed out plants to pedestrians, car drivers, and motorcyclists at key points around the city. Locations included Plaza Las Américas (Salvador del Mundo), Teatro de Cámara Roque Dalton, Redondel Constitución, Árbol de la Paz, Reloj de Flores, Plaza 15 de Septiembre, Calle Zacamil, 29 Avenida Norte in Mejicanos, the Monseñor Romero monument in Ayutuxtepeque, Plaza Jerusalén in Cuscatancingo, and Plaza Monseñor Romero in Ciudad Delgado.
Juan Andrés Flores, head of the Parks, Plazas, and Green Areas Unit, emphasized the importance of promoting a green culture among citizens. “We are here today to commemorate Earth Day and hand out trees and ornamental plants to our citizens… We are distributing 10,000 plants today,” said Flores.
He also noted the municipality’s ongoing reforestation program along riverbanks in nearby communities. “We have a program to plant trees along riverbanks to help preserve the flow, improve the surrounding environment, and support those living nearby. Some rivers are polluted, and planting trees helps restore these areas,” he explained.
Earth Day, observed every April 22, encourages reflection on the impact of human activity on the environment and promotes the protection of natural resources.
