El Salvador has become the first country in Latin America to officially enact legislation focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), setting a precedent for the region with an innovative and forward-looking approach.
Announced by Stacy Herbert, a key figure in the country’s technological and economic transformation, the new law prioritizes the creation of a developer-friendly regulatory ecosystem. Rather than imposing strict limitations on AI use, the legislation seeks to encourage responsible innovation and attract global talent.
“Latin America’s smallest country, El Salvador, became the first country in the region to enact a law on Artificial Intelligence,” Herbert shared via social media. “The [law] takes a novel approach, focusing on the creation of a developer-friendly regulatory ecosystem rather than limiting AI uses.”

Herbert further emphasized the country’s broader vision, stating, “El Salvador always bets on economic liberty, and that gives us the foundation and the confidence to seize the opportunities to lead on innovation.”
This landmark law reflects El Salvador’s ongoing commitment to technological advancement and economic freedom. It follows the nation’s earlier global headlines for adopting Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. With this new AI legislation, El Salvador continues to position itself as a hub for innovation and a model for other countries in the region.

Details of the law are expected to be released soon, as anticipation grows within the international tech community.
