El Salvador has launched an educational reform that guarantees every student who successfully completes high school the opportunity to pursue higher education, technical training, or vocational courses. This initiative is a step towards ensuring equitable access to further education for all students across the country.

“Each of the 50,000 young people who are in their final year of high school can now opt for a university degree, a technical school, or vocational courses,” explained Alejandro Gutman, the ad honorem president of the Integration Directorate.

According to Gutman, out of the 50,000 students, each one now has the choice to decide whether they want to continue their studies and what field they wish to pursue. This shift marks a significant departure from the previous system, which Gutman described as “unjust.” Under the old model, only the top student in the class was awarded a scholarship, leaving the remaining 39 students without support.

“These are not just any scholarships; it is about ensuring that every young person in high school has the chance to continue their educational journey. If they meet their academic requirements with an average grade of 7, participate in 6 programs, they can choose any university in the country,” Gutman emphasized.

It is important to note that students who participate in four programs offered by the Integration Directorate can choose a technical career, requiring a minimum average grade of 6. For those interested in vocational courses, participation in just two programs is sufficient.

This new model is seen as an effort to create equal opportunities for all students, allowing them to pursue their dreams regardless of their academic rank in high school.

The announcement of these scholarships was made on Saturday, March 15, by President Nayib Bukele at the José Adolfo Pineda National Gymnasium, where thousands of excited young people welcomed the news with enthusiasm.

This initiative is a significant milestone in El Salvador’s efforts to provide broader access to education, opening doors for many students who previously faced barriers in continuing their studies beyond high school.
