The government of President Nayib Bukele has officially handed over newly recovered streets in the Historic Center of San Salvador as part of the ongoing revitalization plan. The capital’s mayor’s office reported that the initiative, now in its fifth phase, has successfully cleared five kilometers of public space, ensuring safer and more organized pedestrian and vehicular passage.

Among the restored sections are Gerardo Barrios Street, Rubén Darío Street, 4th and 6th Street West, and 5th, 7th, and 9th Avenue South. More than 1,000 informal merchants, who had occupied these areas for decades, were peacefully and orderly relocated, allowing the city to reclaim its public spaces.

According to municipal authorities, the recovery effort aims to enhance urban mobility while boosting the local economy. Irving Rodríguez, head of the Technical Unit of Commerce in Public Spaces, emphasized that the reorganization will benefit formal businesses that were previously obstructed by street vendors. «Many self-employed merchants participated voluntarily in this safe and violence-free process. Today, these streets are completely clear,» Rodríguez stated.
The mayor’s office has offered informal vendors relocation opportunities within the city’s 32 municipal markets, with many expected to move starting Monday. Meanwhile, efforts continue to improve infrastructure, including underground wiring, resurfacing, and updated road signage.

Vehicular circulation has been restructured, allowing drivers on Gerardo Barrios Street and 6th Street West to merge onto Rubén Darío Street and proceed north. Motorcyclists traveling along Rubén Darío Street can access 4th Street West via 7th Avenue South.
Additionally, municipal crews have removed over 1,000 tons of debris, demolished 399 concrete slabs, and dismantled unauthorized structures. The city is also conducting extensive cleaning, unclogging drainage systems, and fumigating the restored areas.

Pedestrian crossings are now operational in the recovered zone, while vehicular traffic will be reintroduced gradually. Traffic managers will provide guidance as the revitalization project progresses, ensuring smooth and safe mobility within the heart of the Historic Center.
