El Salvador Balances Development and Sustainability in New Airport Project.

The Government of El Salvador has prioritized environmental sustainability in the construction of the Pacific Airport, located in the district of Conchagua, La Unión Sur. President Nayib Bukele emphasized that the project is designed with a focus on the efficient management of water, energy, and solid waste to minimize its environmental impact.

“International studies have guaranteed that not only will there be compensation for the trees affected, but even more than required—meaning that El Salvador’s environment will benefit from this project,” Bukele stated during the groundbreaking ceremony last Tuesday.

As part of the airport’s development, several environmental mitigation measures will be implemented, including:
Sediment barriers to prevent contamination of water sources.
Reforestation with native species to compensate for vegetation loss.
Monitoring of air quality and noise levels in surrounding areas.
Relocation plans for wildlife affected by construction.

Bukele underscored the importance of balancing development with environmental responsibility, ensuring that the project adheres to international standards and includes social and environmental compensation to foster economic growth and job creation.

The Pacific Airport will be developed in three phases, with a first-phase investment of $386.4 million. Once completed, it is expected to handle 5 million passengers annually and facilitate 40,000 operations per year.

Addressing environmental concerns, the president reassured that a thorough environmental impact study was conducted, confirming that the project does not affect any protected areas. “What has been said is not true, but we will still take measures to preserve and promote local ecosystems,” he stated.

Additionally, the Central Government has initiated five infrastructure projects to ensure access to clean water for local communities. “People who have never had proper access to water will now have it, thanks to the funds allocated by this project,” Bukele affirmed.

Regarding land acquisition, the president clarified that all property for the airport was obtained through negotiations with rightful owners and occupants, ensuring a fair and transparent process.

The Pacific Airport is set to begin operations in the second half of 2027, marking a significant step in El Salvador’s economic and infrastructural growth. 🚀✈️🌱
