El Salvador’s Minister of Public Works, Romeo Rodríguez, announced plans to construct three metrocable lines in Greater San Salvador to ease traffic and enhance public transportation. The lines will connect El Boquerón, Panchimalco, and Mejicanos, significantly reducing travel times.

“One line will link the Masferrer roundabout to El Boquerón. Another will serve Panchimalco via Quintas Doradas and Planes de Renderos, while the third targets Mejicanos, connecting Zacamil, the University of El Salvador (UES), and the Government Center,” Rodríguez explained. The system aims to cut travel from Mejicanos to downtown San Salvador from an hour to just 15 minutes.

Controversy arose after UES’s Superior University Council denied permission for soil studies needed to place three support towers on campus. Rodríguez noted ongoing discussions, clarifying that the terminal will be outside the university to benefit both students and the general public.
The metrocable project is part of an Urban Transport Master Plan proposed by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in 2023, which also recommended a monorail system to address heavy commuter demand.
